IMO all trading software should come with the source code. For all you know you could be buying some trojan / virus or other nasty stuff in addition to some rubbish that will make you lose money. Therefore, it's perfectly legitimate to crack trading software if the source is not provided.

Why do most of your post generalize a topic and are negative towards trading. Of course there can be something coded that can make you money in trading. If a ex4 file does not call any dll you can be sure that the damage the program can do is only limited to you account. If you do not trust the author don't use the code or create it yourself. It's not like you look at the source code of every single program you use on a daily basis.

Keep in mind that all a pirate has to do is locate the product name/copyright notice (which should be obvious from the string literals in the source code) and then change those, in order to re-badge a product and sell it as his own.

When I share indicators and EAs freely, I'm not seeking money, gratitude, or a return favor. I was brought up to believe that freely means without any kind of expectation. Having said that, I do get peeved by people who expect something for nothing. I see a big difference between an attitude of giving, and an attitude of taking.

I'm frequently approached by FF members to write EAs and indicators. Of the few requests that I've undertaken, I've never asked for any kind of payment. I don't wish to disclose details of my financial situation, so I'll just say that many EAs take a lot longer to write and test than originally anticipated, and time is more important to me than pocket money.

My main objection is when people take code that has been offered freely, and then decompile and re-badge it so that they can sell it as if it was their own product. This is blatant theft, irrespective of the value of the software, or whether the EA is profitable or not. To anybody who doubts that piracy occurs, see cja's post here.

If a trader engages a commercial programmer to code an EA, then (assuming the EA executes the trader's rules correctly) it is the trader's fault if the EA is unprofitable. The programmer should be paid for his time and effort regardless.
I think re-using code for profit is wrong but sometimes you come across an indicator that you want to tweak a little or figure out what some of the settings are.

The downside is that coders share less because they don't want their code being used for profit or copied.

Many people do not consider something they can do for free, using a computer, in their house as illegal or immoral. Or at least not to a level that will stop them doing so. Look at the effects on the film and music industry.

Compared to the real world, the enigmatic line between right and wrong is in a totally different place in cyberspace.

  1. Possibly this is because of the illusion of anonymity i.e. no faces to the victims, no faces to the perpetrators, no faces to those benefiting

  1. Maybe it is a feeling of not getting caught because the act is committed in a place subconsciously considered safe i.e. home

  1. Perhaps it is a belief that it is a victimless act because society conditions us to perceive property as tangible, physical items i.e. a DVD disc rather than a digital download.

  1. Or perchance there is some weird group polarisation stuff going on. Or a more subtle distinction between being the perpetrator rather than the beneficiary i.e. I won't put ripped DVDs on the internet but I'm happy to download them (because someone else did the bad act so I don't feel morally compromised and I won't be the target for repercussions)


I don't know the psychology. But what I do know is that most people would baulk at the idea of breaking into a film studio to copy their latest release from the 'cutting room floor' but the moral compass points another way regarding stealing code or downloading films over the internet. Would you break into Gordon Ramsay's house to steal his private recipe book? He sells his food so why can't I know how he makes it? He shouldn't sell his food if he doesn't want anyone to know all his recipes...

As with most things, I think empathy (or a lack thereof) plays a large part. So I'll throw out a question to those who consider decompiling acceptable.

Is it OK for a coder to secretly add extra code into an indicator that shows him all your trades from your terminal? Your entries. Your exits. Your pending orders. Your lot sizes. Your account balance. He then gives (or sells) this information to other people.

Consider the following:

  1. It isn't taking any physical property from you.
  2. It won't change your bottom line.
  3. It won't affect your trading decisions.
  4. Surely this is a case of nobly "sharing the knowledge" to the masses because you weren't prepared to share it yourself.
  5. And if you didn't want this happening, you wouldn't be downloading indicators off the internet, would you?

NB don't worry, you can't do this with normal MQL!

You are perfectly right ... except that the allowance is only to drive the car ... not to pirate its technology ... and that's exactly the same difference when coders share the .ex4 and not the .mq4 ... for traders to use the program not pirate its technology.

I have purchesed an indicator for 67 $ and the developer went off the grid now what am i supose to do you whant to protect you ex4 but you can get up and leave after u get peoples money and we the normal pople get left with nothing . Coders are not the only one geting robed .

You learn to code it yourself, or you pay someone else to recode it with whatever changes you need, or you complain about dumb shit on forums like you have here. If you paid for the code itself, not just it's compiled final form, then you'd have the code and wouldn't have any issue. If you didn't pay for the rights to the code then you got what you paid for. Stop being an entitled child.

If you got what you paid for you have no right to complain about a single thing. Services rendered.

Nubcake is right (although he does have a very direct way of putting things lol). Try talking to your bank/credit card provider might get a charge back if recent purchase and vendor isn't playing. Just a thought.
I agree decompilation of ex4 is just akin to stealing from the author.

I also want to add that anyone who is using ex4 indicators from relatively unknown source is just begging to be robed. Who knows what the code will do if you havent seen the mq4 and compiled it yourself. If you are buying an indicator from someone (specially relatively small entity or single person), ask them to give you mq4 - if they dont, then just dont deal with them.
